I was honored to be apart of speaking with Scholars at a local High School on the importance of Financial Literacy, how to become Financial Literate, and the significance of Financial choices in conjunction with attending College. Most of our Scholars have not had to bear the burden of their own financial decisions yet. Without having felt the impact of financial decision-making, it can be difficult for them to understand its importance.
According to statistics:
- Black and African American college graduates owe an average of $25,000 more in student loan debt than White college graduates. Four years after graduation, 48% of Black students owe an average of 12.5% more than they borrowed.
Our focus during these sessions was to build their confidence by simplifying complicated topics like money management, credit, and loans. (Basic Budgeting, Checking/Savings Account, Credit cards, Credit Score). And while personal Finance is an important topic for all Youth, it is vitally significant for our Scholars in underprivileged areas, as their families may not have the Financial means to support them through College.
Financial Literacy by definition is understanding of concepts, which include saving, investing and debt that leads to an overall sense of Financial well-being and trust. In our Supreme Mathematics, Knowledge or being aware and conscious is of the utmost importance as it is the understanding gained through actual experience and how that/those decisions will be implemented in your life. Too often our youth are not aligned with this mere fact and being able to share practical examples on how to navigate this terrain was truly rewarding. In our lessons 6* 1-14 – Lost Found Muslim Lessons No.1 - it asks (Why does the devil teach and keep our people illiterate?) Ans. (So that he can use them for a tool and also a slave, he keeps them blind to themselves so that he can master them. Illiterate means Ignorant). And conversely to be literate means to be able to properly analyze and interpret information.
In conclusion our Scholars were introduced to this knowledge and stand the chance if applied to have more favorable financial attitudes and exhibit more desirable financial behaviors or determined ideas related to Financial Literacy. As our job is civilize the uncivilized and ensure our youth is nurtured, respected, loved, protected, and educated. This starts in your local community.
